According to the weather reports Spring is here…according to the weather, well not so much. However, for several days we did get a glorious preview of Spring in Conyers, Georgia. Spring in the South is magical. Flowers, dogwoods, cherry blossoms, and the whimsical sounds of birds and wind chimes. Easter is near and with Easter come white pants and sandals.
Spring in Shelli’s world is bittersweet. April 9th is a day of reflection for me. April 9th is when I lost mama and I truly became a grown-up. But along with the melancholy comes sweet memories, memories that will stay with me forever and for that I am eternally grateful.
Spring also means spring cleaning. For those that really know me, cleaning is somewhat of a passion, but spring cleaning, well, that is my superbowl! So far I have cleaned out three closets, yeah for me and the American Cancer Society. I have cleaned and reorganized my pantry–poor Mike. I have started on floors and baseboards–dang my poor back. But I love it, or at least I love the results. Spring cleaning can mean something completely different if you are prepared to make changes.
For example maybe it is time to think about the things in your life that may not be good for you or the things you can certainly do better. For example, remember that New Year’s Resolution you made January 1st that has since been unresolved? Think about it again. If you are no longer going to the gym, take a walk. If your diet has seemed to have lost its oomph, just eat better. Where else but in the South can you get fresh fruit and vegetables, and with Spring comes a new crop.
While you are thinking of “springing” into good things think about taking away the bad. Clean out those closets, if you haven’t worn it in 10 years say goodbye. If something is too small or too big get rid of it. Really, if you lose those 10 pounds or if you gain 10 pounds are you really going to wear it again? NO! Someone else can–donate. Clean out your pantry. All that diet food that has expired, don’t waste the space. Fill your fridge with fresh food you will feel so much better and the farmers can stay in business.
Finally, think about the people in your lives. Keep the positive, the people that lift you up and make you, well… make you you. Keep those people. Take a respite from those that make or give you toxic energy. It is ok. If they are truly friends you will find your way back to them on your terms and in a healthy way. Sometimes you just need a break. Revisit old friends. Friends that are always on the other end of the phone but maybe you haven’t seen, held their hand, or given them a hug in a while. Value and treasure those that make your soul soar. Those are the people that make you feel whole and true. Keep them close. Remember you are not guaranteed tomorrow.
So yes, Spring has sprung. Make the most of it. Make the most of you, smell the flowers and embrace a brand new and clean beginning.
