Commissioner Oz Nesbitt and Chairman Richard Oden present Commissioner JaNice Van Ness with a proclamation and flowers to show appreciation for her eight years of public service to Rockdale County.

Commissioner JaNice Van Ness received special recognition for her eight years of public service to the community during the last Board of Commissioners meeting of 2014 on Tues., Dec. 9.

During the meeting, Chairman Richard Oden and Commissioner Oz Nesbitt presented Commissioner Van Ness with a proclamation declaring Dec. 9, 2014 as Commissioner JaNice Van Ness Appreciation Day along with a bouquet of flowers. Rockdale community members and staff applauded her for her years of dedication and passion to make Rockdale a great place.

Commissioner Van Ness served two, four-year terms in the Post II seat. Her term expires Dec. 31.

As a farewell, the public is invited to a reception in her honor at the upcoming BOC Holiday Open House on Tues., Dec. 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the BOC Office, 962 Milstead Ave., Conyers, 30012. No RSVPs are necessary.

The following is the wording from the framed proclamation presented to her:

WHEREAS, Rockdale County celebrates Commissioner JaNice Van Ness for her longstanding commitment to serve its citizens, stakeholders and the business community; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in our community and fourth generation Rockdale County native, Commissioner Van Ness has faithfully served two terms as a County Commissioner, supporting civic efforts, local small and large businesses, recreation opportunities for citizens including the Rockdale Tennis Center, and a fair bidding process for County contracts; and

WHEREAS, since 2007, Commissioner Van Ness has played a pivotal role in championing efficient and effective government, jobs creation and quality of life issues while balancing her role as a wife and mother of three school-aged children; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Van Ness is a respected business woman and educator with a long history of serving the Conyers-Rockdale community through her involvement with the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, Conyers Rotary Club, Rockdale Youth Soccer Association, Community Collaborative group and numerous other community organizations; and

WHEREAS, her 23-year span as a visionary business owner in Rockdale County includes founding Peachtree Academy Private School and serving as owner of several early childhood learning centers; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Van Ness’ passion for Conyers-Rockdale extends far beyond her role as a County Commissioner. Over the years, she has served local organizations, including Phoenix Pass, the Rockdale Republican Party and the Women’s Service Association, a civic-minded group; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce recognized her with its Jerry Barboe Small Business Award. She is also a graduate of Leadership Rockdale, Fayette, and Newton, and the Atlanta Regional Commissions’ Leadership Institute; and

WHEREAS, Rockdale County is proud to salute Commissioner Van Ness for her unwavering leadership in public service, and extends well wishes to her in her future endeavors; now

THEREFORE, be it resolved, that December 9, 2014 be proclaimed in Rockdale County as

Commissioner JaNice Van Ness Appreciation Day
